Oxymetholone, commonly known by the brand names Anapolon or Anadrol, is a powerful synthetic anabolic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and modified as a 17-alpha-alkylated compound. It was originally developed to treat conditions such as osteoporosis and anemia, and to promote weight and muscle gain in malnourished or debilitated patients.

Oxymetholone received FDA approval for medical use. However, after newer non-steroidal treatments for anemia and osteoporosis became available, demand declined. As a result, companies such as Syntex and other manufacturers discontinued production in the early 1990s.
